Creating a Home: Cravinhos Apartment in São Paulo

In São Paulo, there is a growing appreciation for small buildings and their close connection to the cityscape, offering residents a sense of belonging that transcends typical apartment living. The Cravinhos Building, situated amidst the bustling streets and enveloped by a canopy of trees, serves as the canvas for architects Helena Meirelles and Rodrigo Quintella Messina to transform a mere apartment into a warm and inviting home.

Rediscovering Home in the City

The project begins with a fundamental question: How can an apartment embody the essence of home? The architects recognized the potential of the Cravinhos Apartment to leverage its unique setting and architectural elements to create a space that feels deeply personal and connected to its surroundings.

Unveiling Unexpected Treasures

During the renovation process, the architects stumbled upon a remarkable feature: a four-water-trussed wooden roof adorned with intricately carved joints and tie rods. This exquisite craftsmanship, achieved through meticulous handwork, became the focal point of the design, symbolizing the essence of artisanal beauty.

Embracing Authenticity

To honor this architectural gem, the team decided to demolish the existing stucco and repurpose part of the clay brick masonry to construct a new infrastructure core. This central element, housing the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, and closet, became the heart of the apartment. Detached from the apartment’s perimeter and roof, it ensures ample natural light and cross ventilation, fostering a harmonious living environment.

Fostering Versatility and Comfort

Embracing the spirit of adaptability, the architects installed a metal structure atop the central core to create a mezzanine, offering a versatile workspace. This innovative design maximizes space utilization while preserving the apartment’s open and airy ambiance.

Conclusion: Transforming Spaces into Homes

In the Cravinhos Apartment, Helena Meirelles and Rodrigo Quintella Messina succeeded in their mission to reimagine an apartment as a true embodiment of home. By preserving and celebrating the architectural heritage of the building while infusing modern elements, they have crafted a space that transcends mere functionality, inviting residents to experience the joy of belonging and the comfort of home amidst the vibrant city life of São Paulo.
