Concept and Design
The Room Behind the Wall, conceived as a versatile space suitable for use as a psychologist’s office, is an architectural gem crafted by Livni +. The core elements defining this project are a wall, a roof, and a unique rainwater-collecting gutter.
Integration with Nature
Nestled discreetly at the rear of a parcel, the architectural intervention not only serves its functional purpose but also integrates seamlessly with its surroundings. The construction of a concealing wall creates an intriguing juxtaposition, concealing the room while defining a garden within another garden. Drawing inspiration from the works of Matta-Clark, the architects ingeniously introduce a sizable aperture in the wall, fostering a visual and spatial connection between the two gardens.
Architectural Features
Above this wall, the roof emerges, serving both a protective and aesthetic function. The front of the roof boasts an oversized gutter, strategically positioned to collect rainwater. This collected rainwater elegantly drips onto a carefully placed rock beneath, adding a poetic touch to the design.
Material Selection and Sustainability
Operating within the constraints of a limited budget, Livni + demonstrates ingenuity in material selection. Prefabricated Isopanel panels, comprising self-extinguishing EPS foam core sandwiched between galvanized steel sheets, form the walls and roofs. These panels offer structural integrity while minimizing costs. For the exterior cladding, overlapped cementitious boards provide durability and weather resistance. Interior walls and ceilings are adorned with eucalyptus panels, infusing warmth and natural aesthetics into the space. Furthermore, sustainability is emphasized through the use of a black buttoned rubber surface for the flooring, offering durability and eco-friendliness.
Conclusion
The Room Behind the Wall stands as a testament to innovative design thinking and resourceful construction techniques. With its seamless integration into the landscape, thoughtful use of materials, and attention to sustainability, Livni + has created a space that transcends its utilitarian function, inviting contemplation and connection with nature.
