In the heart of Anjo City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, stands the Atelier for Ryosuke Ando, designed by Takayuki Kuzushima and Associates and completed in 2022. This workshop, nestled within an urbanization control zone, serves as a creative hub for pottery artist Ryosuke Ando.
Enhancing Existing Spaces
Situated adjacent to the existing main house, the Atelier extends the functionality of the atelier within the main house by introducing an extension on the south side of the site. The narrow front road and the long open space across the road posed unique challenges and opportunities for the design.
Functional Layout Design
The design approach prioritized functionality and connectivity, considering the workflow and spatial organization of the main house and the surrounding urban context. The layout incorporates a semi-exterior space through a long and narrow corridor, seamlessly connecting the main building with the newly constructed workrooms.
Maximizing Sightlines
One of the key design considerations was to ensure unobstructed sightlines from the main building’s atelier workrooms to the street. This was achieved by aligning the pottery workspaces along the corridor, allowing for visual connection with the surroundings.
Versatile Spaces
The exterior corridor, adjacent to the kiln room, serves multiple purposes, including temporary storage for firing work and an exhibition space open to the community. The architecture seamlessly integrates open and closed elements, reflecting the ethos of pottery work and fostering interaction with the surrounding neighborhood.
Harmonizing Design Elements
The architectural details, such as the Kendon fittings and exterior folded panels, were meticulously crafted to harmonize with Ando’s pottery works. Silver urethane and gold-painted steel hardware add visual interest while preserving the integrity of the design.
