Project Introduction
In the bustling heart of Madrid’s Justicia neighborhood, a unique renovation project unfolded in 2023, orchestrated by gon architects and led by architect Gonzalo Pardo. Marion and Paul Franck, accompanied by their three children, embarked on a journey to establish roots in Madrid after a series of relocations across the globe. Their new abode, a 151 m² penthouse atop a century-old residential building, presented an opportunity for a transformative living experience.
Architectural Transformation
The penthouse, characterized by its enclosed nature, offered a blank canvas for architectural innovation. The focal point of the renovation was the expansive roof, comprising undulating tiles and wooden beams concealed beneath a false ceiling. Instead of viewing this as a limitation, gon architects saw it as an opportunity to reimagine the dwelling. By strategically introducing natural light and ventilation through perforations in the roof, the architects aimed to infuse the interiors with a sense of openness and fluidity.
Spatial Design and Flexibility
The redesign focused on creating a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces while embracing Madrid’s iconic skyline. The interior layout was reimagined as a continuous space with fluid boundaries, blurring the lines between public and private areas. Changes in flooring delineated different zones within the home, while the terrace served as a focal point for gatherings and relaxation, complete with a jacuzzi for year-round enjoyment.
Fusion of Styles and Eras
The interior decor echoed the family’s eclectic journey, blending elements from various periods and places. Antique chairs from the 19th century mingled with iconic designs from the 20th century and contemporary pieces from IKEA, reflecting the diverse experiences of Marion and Paul Franck’s past residences.
Embracing Madrid’s Skies
CIEL, as the project came to be known, redefined the notion of domesticity by prioritizing interaction with Madrid’s skies over its urban surroundings. The renovated penthouse, with its technologically advanced roof and flexible living spaces, offered a sanctuary where the passage of time was celebrated against the backdrop of Madrid’s mesmerizing cobalt blue skies.
Conclusion: A Timeless Haven
CIEL exemplifies a harmonious blend of architectural innovation, spatial design, and personal narrative. By transforming a conventional penthouse into a dynamic living environment that embraces Madrid’s unique charm, gon architects have created a timeless haven where the Franck family can create lasting memories and enjoy the beauty of life’s fleeting moments.
