In the heart of Pantin, near Paris, stands a 1935 building reborn as a specialty coffee shop and roastery, courtesy of the innovative minds at Office Abrami Rojas (OAR). With a penchant for structures steeped in history, the Italian-Mexican architectural design firm embarked on a journey to create a bespoke interior that pays homage to the building’s storied past.
Embracing Architectural Legacy
Unveiling the building’s hidden treasures became the focal point of the design process. The architects meticulously exposed and accentuated the original reinforced concrete and glass domes, long concealed beneath insulating panels. This act of revelation not only honored the building’s heritage but also provided a canvas for contemporary interpretation.
Harmonizing Old and New
A collaborative effort between client and craftsmen yielded ambitious solutions. Custom-crafted steel furniture and terracotta cladding shape a minimalist aesthetic, where the passage of time adorns the space in hues of beige. The interplay between existing elements and modern interventions creates a symbiotic relationship, enriching both in the process.
Maximizing Spatial Connectivity
Strategically delineated spaces, defined by large glass surfaces, seamlessly connect the tasting area, laboratory, and offices. This spatial fluidity fosters an understanding of the building’s layout, facilitating the integration of coffee roasting, sales, and tasting operations. The architectural harmony is further emphasized by the geometric progression of the domes – ellipse, square, and circle – which effortlessly weave into the structure.
Essence of Craftsmanship and Transparency
Transparency, natural light, and reverence for the existing are the guiding principles of this project. Handcrafted materials infuse the space with warmth and character, reflecting the artisanal ethos that underpins OAR’s design philosophy. Founded in 2020 by Filippo Abrami and Helena Haas-Rojas, OAR epitomizes a holistic approach to architecture, marrying attention to detail, sustainable practices, and innovative thinking to create spaces that transcend conventional boundaries.
