Project Overview
MOLD Architects embarked on a transformative journey to renovate and repurpose a historic coffee house in the heart of Chora, Serifos, Greece, into a charming summer residence. Dating back to the 1920s, this two-story building, constructed with load-bearing stonewalls, stood as a testament to the island’s architectural heritage. Architectural Design led by Iliana Kerestetzi aimed to breathe new life into this cultural relic while honoring its rich history.
Revitalizing the Space
The renovation focused on optimizing space and functionality while preserving the building’s character. The main hall was reimagined as an expansive open-plan living area, seamlessly integrating the kitchen, bookcases, lighting fixtures, and relaxation zones. Two small auxiliary rooms were ingeniously transformed into independent bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, ensuring privacy and comfort for residents.
Minimalist Construction Approach
To meet the diverse needs of the main space, a minimalist construction system was employed, emphasizing efficiency and elegance. A three-dimensional grid of steel bars was introduced, spanning the entire height of the space, creating a light and airy ambiance that contrasted with the building’s solid stone structure. This innovative approach not only added visual interest but also contributed to the building’s sustainability by reducing material mass.
Spatial Dynamics and Connectivity
The renovation introduced an intermediate level—a loft—above the living room, connecting the ground floor with the first floor and rooftop, serving as the main outdoor area. The steel framework played a pivotal role in supporting this dynamic spatial configuration, enabling the integration of multiple functions within limited spaces, particularly in the bedrooms.
Conclusion: A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity
The CBO Residence stands as a harmonious blend of historic charm and contemporary design. MOLD Architects’ thoughtful renovation breathed new life into this cultural landmark, transforming it into a modern summer retreat while paying homage to Serifos’ architectural legacy. Through innovative construction techniques and a meticulous attention to detail, the project redefined the boundaries of residential architecture on the island.
